As much of the country is moving into the snowy and icy part of the year, we wanted to share tips for caring for your animals who live outdoors. Winter Wellness Check: Start the winter season off right by taking your pet for a checkup. It's best to get ahead of any illness. Many older pets suffer from arthritis which can worsen in cold weather. After a checkup, your animals will be better prepared to live outdoors during the winter. If they suffer from a major illness, allow them to remain indoors until the weather warms up.

Say goodbye to the Cone of Shame! We are proud to introduce our new No-Chew Chew Prevention Cohesive Vet Wrap. We have taken our powerful Arrow-Vet™ Cohesive Wrap and added our own unique chemistry, using human food-grade chew prevention additives that make our tape smell and taste unappealing to...

When is it Really Time for a Visit to the Vet?

Whether you’re a first-time or a longtime pet owner, it’s never easy to tell when it’s time take your beloved pet to the vet. It goes without saying that animals get rougher, messier, and have a lot less self-control than humans do, so when it comes to bruises, cuts, and other issues, the rule book is a little different. So, when is it ok to let your pet walk it off, and how can you tell when they actually need medical care? According to this article by Dr. Patty Khuly, VMD, it’s typically a good idea to take the “better safe than sorry” approach. After all, your pet can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong. However, there are a few times...

Orthopedic Therapy Under Wraps: The Pros & Cons of External Coaptation

We are often asked about how people can learn more about the practice of taping, positioning, splinting and otherwise supporting the movement and recovery of animals.  We are not trained veterinarians or orthopedists, so we always refer to experts here.  One good article that was published in 2012 offers a broad introduction to this process, which is part of the field of Coaptation in animal health.  “No form of orthopedic therapy has been used….and misused….more and over a longer period than external coaptation. Casts, splints, slings, and support bandages trace their origins to the earliest medical practitioners. The ancient Egyptians and the writings of Hippocrates described the use of splints for fracture immobilization. Over the centuries everything from flour and...

Cohesive Wraps- When It's the Right Choice for Your Animals

A cohesive wrap is a bandage made of material that sticks to itself - but not to other substances.  Wraps are also called cohesive tapes or cohesive bandages, and they have a wide array of uses in veterinary hospitals, stables, kennels and clinics.  A cohesive wrap’s easy tear and strong self-grip make it the ideal choice for supporting a limb. Cohesive wraps are an excellent choice for animal health professionals to use because: Does not stick to skin or hair: The material does grip to itself strongly, but will not pull at, or irritate, skin or hair when you’re removing it. Cohesive wraps are stretchy and offer variable levels of support Offer flexibility during application You can apply it with...

The Effects of Equine Skin Preparation on Transdermal Drug Penetration In Vitro

Tape can be a very practical thing to have around!  In animal health, tapes and wraps are often used to support, help healing, bandaging, and to improve performance.  But there are other, lesser-known applications as well. In a paper published in 2006, authors were looking at ways to improve absorption of topical medications into the skin of horses.  Different topical treatments can have different rates of absorption, skin irritation, and can lead to side effects if it doesn’t absorb quickly. These authors worked in a lab with frozen skin samples of Thoroughbred Geldings.  They then worked with the skin samples the following ways: No skin treatment Cleaning the samples with chlorhexidine (mixed in solution or alcohol) Shaved Tape-stripped using adhesive tape The...

Tales from the Road: Developing a Better Hoof Pad

We are on the road working with partners in large and small veterinary / animal care all the time, and occasionally we will highlight some of the interesting things we've learned along the way, in the hopes that our experiences might help start a conversation with you - feel free to reach out if this post is relevant to your animal health or veterinary care interests! Horses wear shoes.  That, most people know.  However, we at Arrowhead didn't at first realize that the horseshoes worn by a full sized horse, donkey or pony don't relate to the foot care required by the smallest equine group - minis.  Mini ponies, horses and donkeys have a passionate following in real-world and online...

Effects of Athletic Taping of the Fetlock on Distal Limb Mechanics

Many care practitioners rely on academic studies performed in a scientifically rigorous way to test questions related to animal health and procedures, including taping. This study, published originally in 2004, is part of a large body of research on horse fetlock movement and physics (kinematics).     The study wanted to look at whether athletic taping, which is common in human athletes for stability and support of soft tissue, could also have beneficial effects on fetlock movement. The authors of this paper worked with experienced athletic trainers and 6 healthy horses under supervision, hoping to benefit from the experience in forelimb movement that athletic trainers have from their professional backgrounds. The authors wanted to see if taping could: reduce hyperextension of the...

The Belmont Stakes

This weekend is the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown. Surrounding the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, we touched upon the importance of using veterinary tapes and wraps for protection and recovery for these elite horses, both in terms of in-race protection and protection when travelling, as well as the importance of using tapes and wraps for recovering between races. The same holds true with the running of the Belmont Stakes, and may be even more important now.   The Belmont Stakes is the longest of the Triple Crown races, at 1 ½ miles, so protection will be crucial in ensuring that the horses are able to perform to the best of their abilities. Using wraps on...

The Importance of Wrapping Horses' Legs When Traveling

With the Preakness Stakes taking place this weekend and horses traveling in from all over, the importance of protection during travel is on our minds. The Preakness Stakes is the second of the three races that make up the Triple Crown and some of the participants are still recovering from the Kentucky Derby as well as getting over the travel that is associated with competitive horse racing. At the same time, they want to also be fully prepared for the Belmont Stakes in early June.  Protection is, of course, a big component of these horses’ performance during the race, but it is also extremely important that the horses’ legs are protected during their travel to and from races. The competing...
